A pastry chef from Olhão will offer on Saturday a giant toss to the local population, in an initiative aimed at “personal improvement” and involving three days of continuous work by more than a dozen people, said the prosecutor.

Filipe Martins, awarded chef at the Óbidos chocolate festival, is the main face of the initiative and had already offered a king cake to the population at Christmas, attracting hundreds of people to the Algarve city to enjoy his work.

On the occasion of Easter, Filipe Martins decided to offer the traditional sweet of the season again and on Saturday will distribute around 300 kilograms of folar to the population, divided into sections, which will then be assembled on a table, with the support of the Association of Commerce and Services of the Algarve Region (ACRAL) and the Chamber of Olhão, in the logistical part.

Speaking to Lusa agency, Filipe Martins explained that making the folar represents an expense of 3.000 euros and involves working days, practically without rest, to get the 80 meters of cake ready on time.

The Algarve chef lamented the lack of more support, especially monetary, to make the giant cake, stressing that his main objective is to make known his work as a pastry chef and owner of two establishments.

“We're not interested in breaking records or anything. We do this to excel and show that we are good at what we do. Just a short time ago, the magazine by English chef Jamie Oliver was here and we made several jokes for them, which shows that we here in Olhão are good at making them and have good products”, he said.

Filipe Martins said that he has been working continuously since 05:00 on Wednesday to get ready, on Saturday, the 300 kilograms of folar, of various types, such as honey, chocolate or olive oil.

“I've only stopped for a while to go home to take a shower. We even have meals here, so that we can have everything ready by Saturday”, he said, thanking the collaboration of around 15 people, “among friends and professionals”, on the basis of volunteer work.

Another motivation is the family and the two daughters, who “one day will look back and be able, in some way, to be proud of their father”, she added.

The initiative will take place in Largo da Restauração, in Olhão, on Saturday afternoon, and the promoter hopes to attract at least as many people as they were on the day the king cake broke, at Christmas.

“When I made the king cake, it only came to me when I was breaking it, I looked around and saw a lot of people. And to be successful now was to have so many people again and they liked the cakes we prepared”, he concluded.
