The “Door-to-Door Vermicomposting” Project is one of the stars of the commemorations in Loulé of the European Week for Waste Reduction, which takes place from 17 to 25 November, to “raise society's awareness of this issue”.

The production of waste is nowadays one of the environmental problems that causes the most impact, due not only to the increase in its production, but also to the type of waste produced and its danger.

Although the production of waste is inevitable, there are ways to minimize it and make its management more sustainable and less harmful. It is based on this premise that the European Week for Waste Reduction takes place.

Thus, and continuing the existing dynamics in the context of awareness and environmental education of its residents, the Autarchy of Loulé will promote a set of actions.

The Project "Door-to-Door Vermicomposting" Its main objective is to sensitize the participating citizens to the importance of reducing the amount of biodegradable urban waste produced on a day-to-day basis, which is normally sent to landfills.

It is also intended to contribute to soil fertility, through the addition of organic matter in the form of vermicompost and contribute to reducing the operational costs of waste management.

The project will consist of distributing a vermicomposting kit (supplied by the company Futuramb) to the participating residents/households (1 vermicomposter + earthworms + Vermicomposter manual + vermicomposter manual), so that, during the 8-month duration of the project, the they can get to know, experience and deepen this good practice in the recovery of organic waste. The follow-up and monitoring of the project will be carried out by technicians from the Municipality.

The environmental education project "Snack Without Waste" will be hosted with students from the EB1 No. 5 school in Loulé, with the aim of sensitizing children to the prevention of waste through the analysis and weighing of the waste produced by them during lunch and the transmission of knowledge about different ways to avoid the excessive production of waste and over sustainable consumption.

Aiming to promote the reduction of the production of organic waste and the fight against food waste, through the “Wasteless Kitchen” Workshop the intention is to transmit some techniques to avoid food waste in the kitchen, as well as tips on how to buy, how to conserve and what to cook. In addition, good practices related to Sustainable Consumption will also be focused.

This action will target the students of the CEF Cooking Course at the EB 2,3 School Dr. António de Sousa Agostinho, in Almancil, who are future professionals in the catering/kitchen area, and will be promoted on November 22nd. This action is carried out in partnership with DECO.

The municipality will organize the 3rd edition of the Contest "Recycled Christmas", alluding to the reuse of waste. Essentially aimed at the school public, the aim is to raise awareness among participants about the reduction and reuse of waste, particularly during the Christmas season, a time of year conducive to increased consumption and, consequently, to increased waste production.

The contest runs until December 13th and the regulations can be consulted at www.cm-loule.pt. Following the competition, the works will be exhibited to the population.

To be held on November 24, the “Look Low Cost” Workshop aims to reuse and reuse garments, accessories and jewelry. This workshop has a participation cost of €8/per person and also bets on the combination of different pieces of clothing and accessories in order to create different looks.
