The municipalities of São Brás de Alportel and Tavira, in partnership with Soifer Editor, will promote, on Saturday, the 20th, the debate “Innovate nas Terras Ardidas – New approaches to Serra do Caldeirão”, an open meeting for residents of mountains and the general public, interested in the recovery and agricultural dynamics of mountain lands.

As agricultural practices are one of the most interesting fire prevention measures, this debate is intended to encourage new approaches to the mountainous region, with the presence of international and national experts who will address the topic, based on cases of success.

Taking place from 15:00 at the Museu do Trajo de São Brás de Alportel, the debate will feature an opening session, with interventions by the mayors of São Brás de Alportel and Tavira, António Eusébio and Jorge Botelho, respectively , and international consultant Jack Soifer.

The debate will continue with interventions by four speakers, specialized in different areas of knowledge. Jorge Santos, a professor at several Agronomy schools, will be the first speaker in the afternoon, addressing the topic from an agricultural and soil productivity perspective, to unveil “What's in the ashes? What can be done?".

The meeting will continue with João Silva, professor and biological producer, specialized in permaculture, biological cultivation and markets, who intends to share knowledge, but also his professional experience.

The third speaker of the afternoon, agronomist José Silva, will direct his speech to combat the spread of fires using the planting of fig trees in strategically planned locations.

The international consultant Jack Soifer will be the fourth and last speaker to address the audience, in an allusion to the semi-industrialization of fruits and respective exports.

This is followed by a brief moment of animation starring Carla Lopes, who gives voice to the Rap “É para change”, written by Marta Gregório, from INOVAAANTES, which marks the beginning of a third moment open to testimonies by some local businessmen, some members group INOVAAANTES, as well as the general population.

Artur Rego, CDS/PP deputy elected by the Algarve, and Jamila Madeira, former Algarve Member of the PS, close the debate by presenting suggestions so that the Serra do Caldeirão, object of debate in particular, can be “born again from the ashes”.

This will be followed by a moment of conviviality that includes wine tastings, as well as an appreciation of several works by Jack Soifer on the issue of burnt lands.
