“Strategy 2020 and its implementation at a regional level: Innovation and Employment” is the theme of the debate session scheduled for Friday, October 12th, in the auditorium of CCDR Algarve, in Faro, under the Regional Discussion Forum 2012 – Algarve.

The session, which starts at 10:00 am, will be opened by the presidents of CCDR-Algarve (David Santos) and the Chamber of Faro (Macário Correia), and also by João Guerreiro, rector of the University of Algarve, and Teresa Coutinho, representative of the European Parliament Office in Portugal.

This was followed by the panel on “Innovation and Employment”, with the participation of Carlos Lajas, from the Innovation Agency, and Carlos Baía, regional director of the Employment and Professional Training Institute.

In the second part of the debate session, there will be a round table, moderated by the journalist Elisabete Rodrigues, with the presence of the coordinator of the QREN Observatory Paulo Areosa Feio, the consultant Oliveira das Neves, and also MEPs Ana Gomes (PS) and Marisa Matias (BE).

The Regional Discussion Forum 2012 – Algarve takes place under the motto “The values of the European Union”, organized by the Center Europe Direct in the Algarve, whose welcoming entity is CCDR-Algarve.

At the base of the debates will be issues related to Innovation and Employment. As of 2007, the international financial crisis has brought to light the fact that some of the regional development policies have not yet achieved the desired goals.

In too many cases there has been a deepening of the differences in competitiveness between regions, and this inequality has contributed to the worsening of the economic situation in Europe.

This economic reality is evolving more rapidly than the political reality, as evidenced by the global impact of the financial crisis. Growing economic interdependence requires a swift and determined response at the political level. In the last two years, millions of people have lost their jobs.

The Europe 2020 strategy is the European Union's ten-year plan for growth. This strategy aims not only at getting out of the crisis, but also at revising the growth model and creating the necessary conditions to obtain a different type of growth: smarter, more sustainable and inclusive growth.

The regional development strategy of the regions, for the next programming period 2014-2020, will have to be framed in the objectives defined by the 2020 Strategy.
