A crew member of the scientific research vessel “Polarcus Naila” was evacuated this morning by a Portuguese Air Force EH-101 helicopter, for medical reasons, while the vessel was sailing 26 miles south of the port of Vila Real de Santo António.

The 55-year-old American crew member asked for medical evacuation at 08:21 am this Sunday, to the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisboa).

Immediately, and in accordance with the rules and procedures in force, the necessary action for the medical evacuation was taken, with the MRCC Lisboa assuming the coordination of the operations, within its competences.

This center kept track of the situation and after contacting CODU-MAR, a reassessment of the situation was carried out at 8:44 am, with the EH-101 of the Portuguese Air Force, which rescued the individual, was sent to AT1 at 10:30 am.

The crew disembarked at 10:54 am and was transported, in an INEM ambulance, to Hospital Santa Maria, in a stable situation.

The vessel “Polarcus Naila”, with the flag of the Bahamas, is in Algarve waters to carry out the seismic acquisition work, prior to the installation of concessions for hydrocarbon exploration off the Algarve.
