The Sagres School Ship celebrates, next February 8th, 50 years in the service of the Portuguese Navy and Portugal. To mark such an important date in the life of the ship, various activities of a social and cultural nature will take place from February 4th to 12th, with “Sagres” berthed at the Alcântara pier, in Lisbon.

The Sagres training ship was built at the Blohm & Voss shipyards in Hamburg in 1937 and was then named Albert Leo Schlageter. In 1948 he entered the service of the Brazilian Navy and was named Guanabara.

In 1961 it was acquired by Portugal with the aim of replacing the old Sagres, which was no longer in a position to ensure the continuity of instructional trips, inheriting from it all the symbols, including the name itself.

Sagres first hoisted the Portuguese flag on February 8, 1962. Since then, it has ensured the marine training of future Navy officers, thus complementing the technical and academic components taught at the Escola Naval.

In these roles, he made 155 voyages, across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, North, Caribbean, Japan, China, Mediterranean, Arabian, Baltic, Red and Yellow seas.

In his 50 years at the service of Portugal and the Portuguese Navy, he has already made three trips around the world, with 385 visits to ports and around 600 miles navigated, and is known as a Itinerant Ambassador at the service of Portugal.

In articulation with the Presidency of the Republic and the Government, it has provided important support to Portugal's participation in various international events such as the World Expo in New York (1964), the bicentennial of the Independence of the United States (1976), the bicentennial of Statue of Liberty (1986), the Cabrilho Festival in San Diego (1978, 1983 and 1992), the Jacques Cartier commemorations in Canada (1984), the Normandy Landing celebrations in Rouen (1989), the 500th anniversary of the discovery da América (1992), the 450th anniversary of the arrival of the Portuguese in Japan (1993), the commemorations of the discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco da Gama (1998), the commemorations of the Discovery of Brazil by Álvares Cabral (2000), the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens (2004), the bicentennial of the Battle of Trafalgar (2005), the bicentennial of the independence of South American countries (2010) or the Shanghai Expo (2010).

The NRP Sagres is currently one of the best known sailboats in the world, having even hosted numerous distinguished visitors on board, from presidents of the republic, prime ministers, kings, princes, as well as unique cultural figures such as fado singer Amália Rodrigues , Captain Alan Villiers, painter Roger Chapelet, journalist Fernando Pessa or director Manoel de Oliveira, who on board left their testimony in the ship's Book of Honor.
