Airport weather station Faro registered "very strong wind, with gusts that reached 150 km/h", at 5:00 am this morning, he revealed to the Sul Informação the meteorologist Patricia Gomes.

These gusts, which destroyed part of the coverage of the Algarve airport, causing five injuries, were accompanied by heavy rain, which, in the accumulated 12 hours, between 19:00 pm yesterday and 7:00 am today (local time) reached 40 millimeters.

The meteorologist told the Sul Informação that, despite reports from neighbors of the Airport of Faro, namely in Montenegro, where there was also damage, of which it was a tornado, the Meteorology Institute “does not yet have elements to say whether or not it was a tornado”. For this, a 'damage assessment' on the ground would have to be carried out.

In the south of the country, the bad weather was even particularly intense in Almodôvar, where there were gusts of 100 km/h and where the accumulated rainfall in 12 hours reached even 55 mm.

In terms of wind, gusts with 80 km/h were recorded in Castro Marim, the same value as in Sagres.

Em Faro, there was 10 mm of rain at 4:00 am, 20 mm at 5:00 am and 9 mm at 6:00 am. In Castro Marim, the accumulated precipitation reached 34 mm.

Meteorologist Patrícia Gomes also revealed that, after the passage of this very active frontal surface throughout the national territory, for today and tomorrow only showers are expected.

However, on Wednesday the bad weather could return. «It is foreseen the passage of another frontal surface with a lot of activity, but which, in principle, will not reach the Algarve as intensely», he concluded.
