PS visited works to reduce water losses in Lagoa and Tavira

«The impact of climate change has been signaled by the PS in our region since early on», said Jamila Madeira

Candidates from the Socialist Party, from the Algarve circle, were, this Saturday, March 2nd, in Lagoa and Tavira, visiting the works that are underway to reduce water losses in urban supply cycles.

In Lagoa, says the PS, «the municipality is sectioning the network, in order to increase the capacity to detect water leaks and thus reduce system losses and in Tavira, the municipality that has already managed to reduce water losses to historic lows is making the pipelines waterproof.”

The Algarve has 43 million euros to finance works to improve the efficiency of urban water supply networks. Currently, works are taking place in Lagoa, Tavira, Silves, São Brás de Alportel and Albufeira and, with contracts already completed, we still have works carried out in Faro, Lagos and Loulé.

«The impact of climate change has been signaled by the PS in our region since early on. We were the first region in Portugal to approve a Water Efficiency Plan that includes the construction of a desalination plant that is out for tender and that will guarantee 1/3 of the total water that the Algarve needs for human consumption", highlighted Jamila Madeira, who highlighted that in addition to the diversification of water sources, such as water capture in Pomarão and connections to Alqueva, «we must be aware that it is necessary to save and invest in the efficiency of systems, whether urban or agricultural».

Work is also underway in the Bravura and Silves irrigation perimeters to improve efficiency and reduce water losses in agriculture. In total, the Algarve is investing 14,5 million euros in public irrigation systems.

«There are no prosperous regions without strong agriculture. The Algarve is making an effort to diversify its economic base and does not do without having a competitive primary sector. This is why, simultaneously with the search for new sources of water, such as desalination, water capture in the Guadiana, the Foupana dam or connections to Alqueva, both for the Odeleite dam and the Bravura dam, we have we must continue to invest in the efficiency of systems and in savings", concluded Jamila Madeira, pointing out as a good example the investments that are underway in the irrigation perimeters of Arade, in Silves and Barlavento, in Lagos and Portimão, which the socialist candidates had opportunity to visit and check on the ground accompanied by the directors of the respective irrigation associations.
