PJ catches escaped Brazilian fraudster in the Algarve

International cooperation allowed the man’s arrest

A foreign citizen, aged 60, was detained by the PJ's Criminal Information Unit, in the Algarve, in compliance with an international arrest warrant, issued in September last year, by the Brazilian judicial authorities, for committing the crime of qualified fraud.

The Judiciary Police explains that «the facts occurred in 2017 in a city in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, where the suspect, taking advantage of the knowledge derived from the public function in the position he held, managed to commit fraud, which amounted to millions of reais» .

The exchange of information between the PJ and the Federal Police of Brazil, through international cooperation channels, «was extremely important for locating and detaining the suspect», adds the Portuguese police.

Present at the Évora Court of Appeal, it was determined that the man await the terms of the extradition process in preventive detention.
