Castro Marim increases the quality of treated water from the WWTP for irrigation with network rehabilitation

Work started this week

Castro Marim started this week with work on diagnosing and cleaning pipelines to prepare a project for an immediate intervention in sewage collectors, to reduce undue inflows of brackish water and thus increase the reuse of treated water, in a partnership established with Águas do Algarve and Tavira Verde.

According to the Municipality, «the town's sewage network is already old and is close to the Guadiana river, thus there are several inflows of brackish water into the sewage collectors, which are subsequently sent to Águas do Algarve and for treatment at the WWTP of Vila Real de Santo António».

«Salinity in sewers makes water treatment more complicated, thus harming its reuse by the agricultural sector and in the two golf courses in the municipality of Castro Marim, one of the measures in the Resolution of the Council of Ministers to combat drought in the Algarve region which must be complied with", the municipality also states.

The intervention began with a salinity measurement campaign in several locations in the town of Castro Marim, with cleaning of pipes and detection of infiltrations, carried out by Águas do Algarve, through the municipal company Tavira Verde, which carried out the diagnosis with video cameras, financed by the Environmental Fund.

«Good water quality is extremely important for irrigation and golf courses, the reuse of which must include a tertiary treatment to remove nutrients, microbiological pollution and salinity, thus contributing to the fight against the drought that affects the municipality of Castro Marim and the Algarve region”, concludes the municipality.
