The National Maritime Authority (AMN) today advised the population to adopt safe behaviors when visiting the beach or coastal areas following the good weather forecast for the first weekend of Spring.

In a statement, the AMN recalls that at this time of year it is still a winter sea and presents a high risk due to the effects of sea unrest. Furthermore, the beaches are still not supervised.

The sea, warns the AMN, also presents «its morphology altered by the effect of the strong swells that normally occur at this time of year, creating on the beaches areas of bottoms, steep slopes, eddies and pools that are not signposted at this time of year. ».

Also remember that most beaches are not monitored at this time of year, that is, they do not have bathing safety devices.

Therefore, warns the AMN, «the response to a relief situation may be delayed, so the population must behave appropriately and responsibly, not putting themselves in risk situations».

Given the possible crowding on the beaches, AMN recommends permanently monitoring children, avoiding risky behavior, not approaching the water or walking on wet sand, not turning your back to the sea and always staying at a safe distance from the line of water, avoiding being surprised by a wave.

«If you witness a dangerous situation in the water, do not enter and ask for help via 112», AMN also informs.

The IPMA predicts a rise in temperature, which could reach 30 degrees Celsius today and on Saturday in some regions of mainland Portugal. On Sunday, the predicted maximum is 29º in Beja.

In the Algarve, the beaches of Peneco, Pescadores and Alemães, up to the jetty, have a surveillance post with a lifeguard.

The decision was taken in Chamber meeting in November last year, during which an addendum was approved to the collaboration protocol that the municipality maintains with ANSA – Associação de Nadadores Salvadores de Albufeira to ensure the continuity of surveillance on the urban front of the city.
