PJ detects new synthetic drug for the first time in Europe

According to the PJ, the final destination would not be Portugal

The Scientific Police Laboratory (LPC) of the Judiciary Police detected for the first time in Europe a new synthetic drug, N-desethyl-isotonitazene, in a seizure of thousands of fake oxycodone tablets, «whose final destination would not be Portugal».

In a note, the Judiciary Police explains that pTo identify them, the LPC relied on complementary analyses, carried out in collaboration with the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the Instituto Superior Técnico.

«This new psychoactive substance belongs to a chemical class that recently emerged in Europe, called nitazenes. Its use evokes feelings of euphoria followed by drowsiness, causing blockage of the respiratory system, which is the main cause of death from overdose», explains the PJ.

Since 2019, the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction has flagged 16 compounds from this class of nitazenes, mostly in the north of the European continent.
