Albufeira swimming pools with new energy efficiency measures and water reuse

«The captured waters are then used for washing waste containers, washing roads, urban cleaning and watering public spaces», explains the municipality

The Municipality of Albufeira has several projects underway aimed at improving energy efficiency and promoting the reuse of washing water from swimming pool filters, in a global investment of close to 450 thousand euros.

After the implementation of a Production Unit for self-consumption using photovoltaic panels in swimming pools, the Municipality of Albufeira decided to start the project aimed at implementing efficiency measures
energy, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

The two interventions involve a global investment of more than 315 thousand euros, and an application for community funds is currently underway – ALG-03-1203-FEDER-000017 – Improvement of the Energy Efficiency of Albufeira Municipal Swimming Pools, approved within the scope of PO CRESC Algarve 2020, which is estimated to contribute 28 euros to the operation.

According to the municipality, the project involves improvements in the placement of a self-consumption unit using solar panels, highly thermally efficient boilers (condensation) for heating water, screens for conditioning water in tanks, in order to minimize cooling. and evaporation of water at night, correction of thermal insulation on roofs and installation of low-consumption lighting using LED luminaires.

With a view to promoting the reuse of washing water from swimming pool backwash filters, (a volume
average of 30-35 cubic meters/day) a project is also underway to capture the rejected water (ApR) in the pipes, which is subsequently transported to three reservoirs installed on site.

«Next, the water is pressurized to a specific hydrant, located close to the sports equipment, next to the road. The water collected is then used for washing waste containers, washing roads, urban cleaning and watering public spaces», explains the municipality.

The system has a storage capacity of around 100 cubic meters. At the same time, it will be
A remote management system was installed that allows you to remotely coordinate and monitor the entire operation.

The contract was awarded for 129 thousand euros and will be financed by the Portuguese Environment Agency, in the amount of 100 thousand euros.

The work is expected to be completed in March.

The Mayor of Albufeira highlights the importance of the works, considering the problem of climate change and the effects of the extreme drought that are being felt in the region.

«It is urgent to reduce polluting emissions released into the atmosphere, take measures to avoid wasting water and take care of our planet so that the environmental quality of our common home improves, because this is the most important inheritance we can leave to our children», says José Carlos Rolo, highlighting that this has to be one of the main concerns of municipalities that have to take effective measures to combat the problem.
