Tavira Museum promotes guided tour of the “Balsa, Roman City” exhibition

Initiative will be guided by archaeologist Celso Candeias

The Municipal Museum of Tavira will promote on February 24th, at 10:30 am, a visit to the exhibition “Balsa, Roman City”, guided by Celso Candeias, an archaeologist from the municipality of Tavira who participated in the excavations carried out recently at this archaeological site.

On display at Palácio da Galeria, the exhibition “Balsa, Cidade Romana” «provides a journey of 2000 years, to the time when it flourished, next to the banks of the Ria Formosa, the city that became the capital of a municipium Roman".

«Across 10 rooms, and through an exhibition based on around 100 pieces from various national museums, we will learn about various aspects linked to the origin and evolution of that city, as well as its main economic activities, eating habits and the daily lives of its inhabitants", according to Tavira City Council.

The exhibition also highlights “the names of some Balsa citizens and their respective professional positions, their concerns with health, beauty and religion or the funeral rituals practiced by some of them at the time of the death of their loved ones, whose names, engraved in stones, remained eternal until our days”.

Those interested in participating (maximum 15 people) must register by February 22nd through this link.

More information can be obtained from the Tourism, Heritage and Museums Division of the Municipality of Tavira, via telephone 281 320 545/568 or email [email protected].
