Faro and Beja among the districts under orange warning due to maritime unrest

In these two districts the warning will only be activated between 15pm on Friday and 00am on Saturday

Faro and Beja are among seven districts on the continent under orange warning due to maritime unrest, said the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The orange warning, which will be in force in Braga, Viana do Castelo and Porto between 12pm and 00pm today, is due to «southwest waves measuring five to 18 meters», said the IPMA, in a statement.

Already in Faro, Beja, Lisbon and Setúbal, the orange warning, to be activated between 15:00 on Friday and 00:00 on Saturday, is due to «waves from the west with five to six meters, which can reach 10 meters in maximum height».

Viana do Castelo is still under orange warning due to south-southwest winds with gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour on the coast and up to 110 kilometers per hour in the highlands, between 12pm and 00pm today.

The south coast and mountainous regions of Madeira are under an orange warning for precipitation, between 15pm today and 00am on Friday.

The orange warning is the second most serious on the scale and is issued in “moderate to high risk meteorological situations”, according to IPMA.
