National Judo Championship brings together more than 400 athletes in Albufeira

This weekend, March 2nd and 3rd

450 athletes from 700 clubs from various parts of the country will be this weekend, March 2nd and 3rd, in Albufeira, for the AS Nacional Juniors Championship & National Junior Judo Teams Championship 2024. 

The competition, organized by the Portuguese Judo Federation with the support of the Municipality of Albufeira, the Algarve District Judo Association and the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth, will take place at the Albufeira Municipal Pavilion, starting at 10 am.

There will be 700 clubs from mainland Portugal and the islands competing in the various weight categories: -60 kg, -66 kg, -73 kg, -81 kg, -90 kg, -100 kg, +100 kg (men) and - 48 kg, -52 kg, -57 kg, -63 kg, -70 kg, -78 kg and +78 kg (women).

For Albufeira, Luan Abib, Rodrigo Neto, Daniel Kulish and Bárbara Soledade are competing for a place on the podium, in the individual event and, in the team event, Danilo Storozhuk, Luan Abib and Rodrigo Neto, athletes from Clube Desportivo Areias de São João.

José Carlos Rolo, president of Albufeira, states that this «is another clear demonstration of the Municipality's support and investment in Sports».

The mayor highlights the importance of sport at a competitive level, with teams striving to achieve good results and, with that, contributing to taking Albufeira's name further, but also at the level of training layers and sporting activity informal «as a way of promoting citizenship, team spirit and discipline, contributing to the formation of a more balanced and inclusive society».

Cristiano Cabrita, vice-president of the municipality and responsible for Sports and Youth, adds that «Albufeira continues to demonstrate that it has the conditions to host major sporting events at national and international level, which positions us in a comfortable situation to be European City of Sports in 2026».

The mayor also makes a point of highlighting the importance of hosting this type of events during the low season, which helps to boost the local economy and, at the same time, is a strong investment in Sports Tourism, «since athletes, in addition to the teams, techniques, are usually accompanied by family and friends who take the opportunity to get to know the municipality».
