History Days of Baixo Guadiana mark ten years of life

«The Government of Sebastião Martins Mestre in Vila Real de Santo António» is the theme of the initial conference of the Baixo Guadiana History Days, which return to the António Rosa Mendes Municipal Historical Archive, in Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA), this Friday Monday, January 26th, from 9:30 am.

The meeting begins at 10:00 am, with the opening act, and the initial conference, scheduled for 10:15 am, will be presented by Cátia Pereira, master in History and Heritage from the University of Algarve.

Sebastião Martins Mestre was present at two important events for Portuguese society in the 19th century: the French Invasions and the Liberal Wars. The soldier and politician born in Santo António de Arenilha stood out for his intervention in the Napoleonic invasions. His image, however, was affected by his conduct, when he embarked on a political career, namely, when he became governor of Vila Real de Santo António.

At 11:30 am, art historian Marco Sousa Santos, senior culture technician from the Municipality of Tavira and professor at the University of Algarve, presents the conference «From Seinal to Arenilha, from Arenilha to Castro Marim: the long journey of a XNUMXth century altar table ».

Recently identified in the Hermitage of Santo António, the altar table and the stone of Armas by António Leite They constitute the only archaeological materials, however identified, from Santo António de Arenilha, the predecessor village of Vila Real de Santo António, known for being a port for smuggling, slave trafficking and piracy.

At 15:00. There will be a guided visit to the Ermida do Revelim de Santo António, in Castro Marim, led by Marco Sousa Santos and Pedro Pires, senior culture technician at Castro Marim City Council and PhD student at the University of Algarve.

The Baixo Guadiana History Days, part of the cultural program of the Eurocity of Guadiana, are organized by the António Rosa Mendes Municipal Historical Archive / Vila Real de Santo António Municipal Council and include, among other speakers, the collaboration of researchers, university teachers , heritage technicians and editors.
