Faro and Beja under yellow warning on Tuesday and Wednesday due to strong wind

Districts are still under yellow warning between 00:00 and 18:00 on Wednesday due to maritime unrest

The districts of Faro, Beja, Viseu, Évora, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre and Braga will be under yellow warning this Tuesday and Wednesday due to the wind strong, with gusts of up to 75 kilometers per hour (km/h) expected, and up to 95 km/h in the highlands. 

IPMA also placed the districts of Faro, Beja, Setúbal, Lisbon and Leiria under yellow warning between 00:00 and 18:00 on Wednesday due to sea unrest, with south-west waves of 4 to 5 meters expected.

Today, there are also eleven districts on the continent under yellow warning due to the forecast of sometimes heavy rain, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, due to the effects of depression 'Irene', according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The depression will affect the weather in mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Region of Madeira, with strong winds, heavy rain and sea disturbances until the end of the day on Wednesday, according to IPMA.

Due to the heavy rain, the districts of Coimbra, Guarda, Viseu, Aveiro, Bragança and Braga will be under yellow warning until 9 am today and Lisbon, Santarém, Portalegre, Leiria and Castelo Branco until 00 pm.

The IPMA also issued a yellow warning for all districts on the continent between 18pm on Tuesday and 00pm on Wednesday due to the forecast of persistent and sometimes heavy rain, which could be accompanied by thunderstorms.

The Eastern (São Miguel and Santa Maria) and Central (S. Jorge, Faial, Pico, Graciosa and Terceira) groups are also under yellow warning due to sometimes heavy rain.

In the eastern group, the warning will be in force until 21pm today and in the central group between 00am and 9pm today.

Also due to the forecast of heavy rain, the IPMA issued an orange warning for the mountainous regions and south coast of Madeira between 00:00 and 15:00 on Tuesday and yellow for the north coast between 00:00 and 15:00.

The IPMA also placed the north coast, south coast and Porto Santo under yellow warning due to the forecast of maritime unrest (between 6:00 am on Tuesday and 12:00 pm on Wednesday).

The south coast and mountainous regions of the island of Madeira and Porto Santo will also be under yellow warning due to strong winds (between 00:00 and 18:00 on Tuesday).

The orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation and the yellow warning when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.

On Saturday, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) issued a warning to the population regarding the risk of flooding on the continent due to the forecast of rain.

In view of the worsening of adverse weather conditions, Civil Protection warned of the forecast of "flooding in urban areas, caused by the accumulation of rainwater due to obstruction of drainage systems or coastal overtopping", as well as the occurrence of floods, "enhanced by overflow of the bed of some watercourses, rivers and streams»

ANEPC points to the risk of urban flooding in the Tagus River Basin and increased inflows in the Vez River, the Lima River, in the North, and the Aguieira, Raiva and Fronhas system, in the Mondego Basin, Central region.
