The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday, the 30th, electronically, the declaration of national mourning for tomorrow, January 31st, for the death of Jacques Delors.

Portugal and Spain jointly decided to declare national mourning, in order to coincide with the tribute event that will be organized that same day by the European Commission, in Brussels, and which will be attended by Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa.

Jacques Delors, president of the European Commission from 1985 to 1994, «was a central figure in the idealization and construction of Europe and played an essential role in the accession of Portugal and Spain to the European Union in 1986», highlights the statement from the Council of Ministers.

Therefore, «both countries agree on the importance of paying this fair tribute, in a clear sign of gratitude and recognition for the profound transformation that accession to the European Union had for entire generations of Portuguese and Spanish people».
