WallRide rehabilitates public lighting at SkatePark in Faro

Public equipment had been without lighting since around 2010

The SkatePark Faro, opened in 2008, is once again shining with its own light after more than a decade in the dark due to acts of vandalism. The WallRide Association, in partnership with the City Council of Faro and the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ), successfully completed the skatepark lighting rehabilitation works.

The rehabilitation took place within the scope of the Sports Facilities Rehabilitation Program (PRID), promoted by the State Secretariat for Youth and Sports/IPDJ, which highlights the importance of modernizing and rehabilitating local sports spaces, «where associative organizations, in In particular, sports clubs play a crucial role in meeting the sporting and cultural needs of local communities", highlights WallRide.

With the support of the City Council of Faro and IPDJ, the WallRide Association carried out the lighting rehabilitation works, mainly aiming to extend the skatepark's usage time.

This intervention allows sports to be practiced during winter nights, when it gets dark earlier, and on summer days, when the intense heat makes sporting activities difficult for much of the day.

In addition to increasing space availability, the extended lighting from 17:30 pm to 3:00 am aims to contribute to the social improvement of the skatepark, deterring anti-social behavior and acts of vandalism.

Viriato Villas-Boas, president of WallRide, expressed his gratitude: “our Association and the wider community are extremely grateful for the trust and support shown by both the Municipality and the IPDJ”.

“This reversal of the physical integrity of the space will certainly contribute significantly to the ongoing social transformation that has occurred at the skatepark in Faro. We envisage that the skatepark will become a more frequented and accessible place, thus expanding the positive social impact promoted by WallRide,” she added.

WallRide is a non-profit association that promotes skateboarding as a tool for social and community development, standing out for its commitment to gender equality, inclusion and support for individuals in vulnerable situations.
