The President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa signed this Thursday the Government's resignation decree, which will come into force on Friday, from which point the executive will be limited to management acts.

“Following and as a result of the Prime Minister’s resignation, the President of the Republic decreed today, in accordance with the Constitution, the resignation of the Government, with effect from tomorrow, December 8th”, reads a published note on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet.

The same note states that “after his resignation, the Government will limit itself to the practice of acts strictly necessary to ensure the management of public affairs”, as established by the Constitution, in article 186, paragraph 5.

This formalization takes place a month after Prime Minister António Costa presented his resignation to the President of the Republic, on November 7th, who accepted it immediately and, consecutively, decided to dissolve parliament and schedule early legislative elections for March 10th. .
