Openings and awards mark celebrations of Portimão City Day

The elevation of Portimão to the city took place 99 years ago

The inauguration of the Official Animal Collection Center, the Alvor Lifeguard Interpretive Center and the Mortuary House in the same location, as well as the laying of the first stone of Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, next to the Municipal Market, will be the highlights of the Portimão City Day, which is celebrated on December 1th.

From the program, Portimão City Council also highlights the presentation of the Municipal Volunteer Award and the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Literary Award, with a presentation of the winning work, as well as the Sports Gala – Homage to Portimonense Champions and the opening of the exhibition relating to the award-winning works at the 23rd Portimão Photographic Race.

The first official moment of the celebrations 99th anniversary of the elevation of Portimão to the city will take place on Tuesday, December 5th, the date on which International Volunteer Day is celebrated, with the revelation of the winners of the fifth edition of the Municipal Volunteer Award in the individual and collective categories, in a ceremony scheduled for 11 am in the small auditorium of TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão.

The ceremony will be preceded by the round table “Volunteering – Giving and Receiving”, scheduled for 10 am in the same location. The panel of speakers for this session will be Nuno Cabrita Alves, president of Banco Alimentar do Algarve, Miguel Veiga, technician from the Algarve delegation of the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth, Teresa Di Tria, volunteer at Refood, and Marta Monteiro, coordinator of the DYPALL Network Project – Association for the Development of Citizen Participation.

On Wednesday, the 6th, at 18:30 pm, the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Literary Prize will be awarded, which will take place at the Municipal Library of Portimão and will be attended by the winner, Pedro Almeida Maia, whose work “A Força das Sentenças” deserved distinction from this year's edition jury, made up of Idalina Rodrigues, Mila Mariano and Carlos Café, also present at the ceremony.

On December 7th, the main hall of the Paços do Concelho de Portimão will host, at 16 pm, the tribute that the Municipality will dedicate to the teachers who retired during the last academic year.

On the 8th, a public holiday, at 15pm, the new Alvor Mortuary House will be inaugurated, «built on land acquired by the Portimão City Council next to Morabito and the cemetery, in order to resolve the deficiencies of the Misericórdia chapel, where they are currently held. the funeral ceremonies", according to Portimão City Council.

An hour later, the Portimão Arena hosts the Sports Gala – Homage to the Portimonense Champions of the 2022/2023 Season, with the awarding of prizes to athletes who, individually or collectively, obtained international, national or district federative titles, whether in representation of the national teams, or of the clubs, schools or universities in which they are affiliated.

Entities or personalities who, in a relevant way, contributed to the development and sporting merit of the municipality or sport in general will also be distinguished.

On Saturday, December 9th, at 11:30 am, the inauguration of the Official Animal Collection Center of Portimão will take place, located in the Coca Maravilhas industrial area, which will increase the response capacity of the old kennel.

It will be launched at the TEMPO café-concert at 15pm on the same day No. 3 of “Meridional – Mediterranean Studies Magazine”, edited by the Institute of Ibero-Atlântica Culture, based in the city, whose presentation will be in charge of Manuel Frias Martins, president of the Portuguese Association of Literary Critics, with a musical note by the Academia de Música de Portimão.

 

 

On the same date, the 16th anniversary of the Municipal Market of Portimão, located on Avenida S. João de Deus, will be marked with the opening at 10 am of the exhibition “Bichinho da madeira”, which brings together pieces made of wood and other materials, mainly recycled, from written by Portimão artists Marta Silva and João Cláudio Marques, which can be seen until January 00th.

The exhibition of the award-winning works and the delivery of prizes to the winners of the 23th Portimão Photographic Race, held this year in person and online, is also scheduled for December 9th, from 17pm, at the Portimão Museum, where it will be on display until March 00th.

Also on this day, from 18pm onwards, it will be possible to watch the launch of the New Year's Eve program in Portimão, which will take place in the square of the old fish market.

For December 10th, the eve of City Day, two events were scheduled where music dominates, the first of which is the Final Gala of “Portugal a Dançar”, the biggest national dance competition, which “will fill the Portimão Arena with rhythms contagious from 17pm, bringing together the top three from the 00 locations that took part in the competition».

The gala of national dance talents has free entry, subject to seat availability and upon prior collection at the Portimão Arena ticket office.

The other highlight of this date will be the Commemorative Concert for the 99th Anniversary of the Elevation of Portimão, performed by the PSP Symphonic Band, which will start at 21pm in the large TEMPO auditorium.

Also in this case, entries will be free. although subject to room availability and upon prior collection at the TEMPO ticket office, from December 6th.

As is traditional, the celebrations of December 11th, City Day, will start at 9:30 am at Largo 1º de Maio with the Raising of the Flag, where the Fanfare of the Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Portimão, the Sociedade Filarmónica Portimonense, the Sociedade Columbófila de Portimão, the PSP, the GNR and the Maritime Police – Captaincy and Algarve Rifle Association.

Half an hour later, the Memorial to the Former Combatant will be inaugurated at the Portimão Cemetery, with this tribute being paid to the Lagoa/Portimão Center of the League of Combatants and the Portimão City Council.

 

 

One of the highlights of the solemn session, scheduled for 11 am in the main hall of Paços do Concelho, will be the presentation of the set of cultural and artistic initiatives, which will mark the first centenary of Portimão's elevation to city status over the next year.

The afternoon of December 11th will be marked by the laying of the first stone of Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, scheduled for 15:30 pm, a new green and leisure space in the heart of the city.

The final official moment of the City Day program will take place from 15pm on December 00th, when the Alvor Lifeguard Interpretive Center opens, which includes the community show “To the taste of luck and destiny ”.

The festivities marking the 99th anniversary of the city of Portimão include the participation of the municipality's associative movement, «which has prepared several activities».
