Algarve Literary Route inaugurates signage for the Caldas de Monchique itinerary

The Monchique itinerary is a tour of the thermal complex

The Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve (DRCAlg) and the Chamber of Monchique will inaugurate, on Sunday, December 3rd, the first itinerary of “Algarve Literary Route” which has signage installed: the Caldas de Monchique promenade.

The opening will be at 15pm at the Villa Termal das Caldas de Monchique hotel, followed by the respective route, part of the Monchique Walking Festival.

The “Algarve Literary Route” is a set of itineraries in the Algarve territory. Each of these itineraries corresponds to a brochure, available on the Rota Literária do Algarve page, and a signposted route on the ground – this will be the first –, so that visitors can follow it independently.

Taking as a starting point literary texts by Algarve authors and others who referred to the Algarve in their works, a relationship was established between these references and the physical space that generated literary places, later organized and interconnected through narratives that establish coherence between points stop.

They are narratives about a specific place, which result from the intersection of the selection of literary texts and the interpretation of the landscape, complemented with other pertinent information that accompanies the hiker in a unique and enriching experience.

The Monchique itinerary is a tour of the thermal complex, during which a new look at the places and history of this space is promoted, filtered through a set of literary references, as is the case of Ramalho Ortigão, who described this place as Sintra do Algarve and other authors who wrote about Caldas de Monchique.

The brochures offer a narrative that results from the encounter of literary texts with the biographies of the writers and the territory, and is complemented with information on the history, demography, gastronomy, legends and traditions of each of these places.

The tours on the “Algarve Literary Route” invite you to discover places, heritage and stories that inspired poets and writers. In each of the itineraries, the visitor is guided by a narrative that offers an unprecedented reading of the spaces covered.

The mentors of the “Rota Literária do Algarve” are Sílvia Quinteiro and Rita Baleiro, professors and researchers at the Higher School of Hotel and Tourism Management at the University of Algarve.

This project was one of the winners of the 2018 Portuguese Participatory Budget (OPP). The OPP is an initiative of the Portuguese State, managed by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of State Modernization and Administration and operated by the Algarve Regional Directorate of Culture, which delegated the execution of the project to the University of Algarve.
