Olympic qualification for 3 classes of sailing takes place in the waters of Vilamoura

It is the first time that an Olympic qualification event for three classes has been held in Portugal simultaneously.

The 49er, 49er FX and Nacra17 European Championships will take place in Vilamoura from November 4th to 13th and serve as qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This is the first time that an Olympic qualification event for three classes has been held simultaneously in Portugal.

These Championships are organized by Vilamoura Sailing and, in addition to revealing the names of the next European champions, they will also serve as a qualification test for all those who dream of being present at Paris 2024.

«It is worth highlighting the fact that these Olympic qualifying events will bring to Portugal the best sailors in the world looking to gain access to the 2024 Olympic Games. But the youngest teams will also be here, in full Olympic progress for 2028. This is the opportunity to sail with the best in the world and get to know the excellent conditions of Vilamoura», says Nuno Reis, director of Vilamoura Sailing.

In Vilamoura, there will be around 400 sailors and 80 coaches from 34 nations. For many countries, which have already guaranteed their presence in Paris, these Vilamoura championships will play a fundamental role in qualifying the athletes who will join their Olympic teams.

This elite of European sailors will experience decisive moments off Vilamoura and therefore, it is with expectation that the fleet of each class prepares for the 18 demanding regattas that will be contested throughout the competition.

The presence of the 49er world champions, Bart Lambriex and Floris Van de Werken, from the Netherlands, and the Swedish duo Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler, 49er FX world champions, among many other renowned names, have already been confirmed.

Most of these Olympic teams have been interning at Vilamoura Sailing for several weeks. More than two hundred sailors even participated in the Training Regattas in preparation for the Europeans, promoted by Prow Group and which took place between the 27th and 29th of October.

Over the last eight years, Vilamoura Sailing has become a reference destination, worldwide, for Olympic team training camps.

Many settle in Vilamoura during the winter months, especially between October and March, due to the excellent conditions there for training and sailing.

Despite already being familiar with the venue and the waters of Vilamoura, the four hundred sailors who will be competing in these European Championships know that these will be regattas that will demand their best performance. In Vilamoura, success could guarantee the long-awaited place in the next Olympic Games.

The transmission of these Europeans through livestreaming it will allow images of the regattas to be followed live, anywhere in the world.

The opening ceremony of the event, with the parade of all teams, takes place on November 7th, at 18 pm, at Vilamoura Marina.
