The President of the Republic received the Prime Minister in Lisbon this morning, at his request, a source from the Presidency of the Republic told Lusa.

The Prime Minister's communications office confirmed today the carrying out searches by the PSP in the office of Vítor Escária, chief of staff of the prime ministero, adding that there are no comments from São Bento on the judicial action.

«We confirm that there are searches in the office of the chief of staff [Vítor Escária]. We do not comment on the judicial action,” a source working for António Costa told the Lusa agency.

The Público newspaper reported that PSP had carried out searches this morning in several ministries and at the prime minister's official residence, in São Bento, as part of an investigation into lithium exploration projects, in Montalegre.

According to Público, António Costa's chief of staff, Vítor Escária, Costa's close consultant, Diogo Lacerda Machado, and the president of Sines City Council, socialist Nuno Mascarenhas, were arrested, as well as two company executives.

The newspaper added that the Minister of the Environment, Duarte Cordeiro, and the Minister of Infrastructure, João Galamba, as well as the previous Minister of the Environment, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, will be accused.
