The work on the new bridge at Praia de Faro «it is proceeding as planned» and the «most critical phase in terms of execution has passed».

The balance was made this Tuesday, October 31st, by Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, and Luís Palaré, from Engisphera, the company responsible for supervising the work, during an executive visit to the bridge, part of the initiative “Faro Positive".

«An important phase of the work was to comply with the environmental part. Fortunately, everything went well. We also monitored the existing bridge and everything went well. At this moment, the most critical phase in terms of execution has passed and we are entering a more critical phase in terms of cargo movement", explained Luís Palaré, noting that the transport of beams of around 20 meters will "cause some disruption in traffic », but this part is expected to be completed by May.

Although everything is “going according to plan”, Rogério Bacalhau no longer expects the bridge to be inaugurated before the summer, as was initially stipulated, but between that period and the end of 2024.

«Fortunately, we carried out the surveys, adapted the project and it went very well. At this moment, things no longer have the danger of going wrong, as they did before, because we have piles driven 49 meters here – it's a building very high -, others less, at 35, but all of this went within normal limits and, above all, without harming the ecosystem», explained the mayor.

«Next week, the stakes will all be completed and then we will start making the board, in November. Something very strange would have to happen for it not to be completed in 2024,” he continued.

This “is the most complex work, not only in the municipality of Faro, but in the Algarve, which has already been done, at least in this century», also taking into account the ecosystem in which it is located.

The total work includes the construction of the bridge, with two lanes, a parking lot, environmental regeneration area and landscape, stopping points, pedestrian and cycle walkway in nationwide, pedestrian walkway, car circulation route and GNR checkpoint.

The area of environmental regeneration and landscaping, which includes the construction of a roundabout, already within Praia de Faro, was scheduled for the end of the work, but it will be done before, so that “we do not have major works between July and August”.

«We have to understand that Praia de Faro It has limited space, like everywhere else, but here there is only one entrance, which today, at the same time, is an exit. When we have both lanes working, the exit lane will always be open, which will create a much greater sense of effective security than we have today. For the entrance lane, the idea is to have a traffic light so that people wait before the beach and not inside», explained Rogério Bacalhau.

Regarding the budget, the president of the Chamber of Faro says that it remains at 6,6 million, but reinforces that there is a lack of investment “of around 1 million” to remove the current bridge.

To do this, it will be necessary to launch a new competition.
