International certificate distinguishes Olhão for 10 years of Blue Flag in Fuseta-Ria

The ceremony distinguished the bathing area for the work carried out in the field of environmental education

The municipality of Olhão was awarded the International Certificate of Participation in the Blue Flag Program, for 10 consecutive years of displaying the blue flag on Fuseta-Ria beach.

The ceremony, which took place on November 21st, in Oeiras, distinguishes the bathing area for the work carried out in the field of environmental education.

The Blue Flag Program is an education project for sustainable development, promoted in Portugal by the Blue Flag Association of Europe, the Portuguese section of the Foundation for Environmental Education. The Municipality has participated in this initiative since 2006, where it competes with four beaches in the municipality.

In a note, the Chamber of Olhão recalls that «the award aims to educate for sustainable development on coastal, river and lake beaches, recreational ports and marinas, and recreational and ecotourism vessels that apply and meet a set of related criteria with environmental information and education, bathing water quality, environmental management, safety and services, social responsibility and community involvement».

Regarding this distinction, António Miguel Pina, mayor of Olhão, highlights the importance of participating in this European project, «which raises awareness in the community about environmental education and sustainability».

«Fuseta-Ria has complied, for ten consecutive years, with all the requirements of the Blue Flag Program. This is the result of work carried out year after year by the Municipality», concluded the Mayor.
