Italian septuagenarian rescued by helicopter from ship off Cabo de São Vicente

From the passenger ship «Costa Firenze», which was sailing approximately 166 miles southwest of Cabo de S. Vicente

An EH-101 Merlin helicopter, from the Portuguese Air Force, rescued, during Saturday afternoon, a passenger from a cruise ship, aged 78 and of Italian nationality, who presented symptoms of a myocardial infarction.

The man was on the passenger ship “Costa Firenze”, which was sailing approximately 166 miles, the equivalent of approximately 307 kilometers, southwest of Cabo de S. Vicente.

The ship made a request for assistance, which reached the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisboa) via a telephone call from MRCC Rome, in Italy, at 14:15 pm.

According to the Navy, the Sea Urgent Patient Guidance Center (CODUMAR) was immediately informed, which assessed the victim's condition, considering the situation as an urgent medical evacuation.

With the medical opinion of urgent rescue, MRCC Lisboa sent the EH-101 helicopter to rescue the passenger and transport him to Lisbon Airport. Faro, where he landed at 19 pm. The man was transported by ambulance to a Hospital Unit.
