Eugénio de Andrade, pseudonym of José Fontinhas, was born on January 19, 1923 in Fundão. He always maintained an independent stance towards the various literary movements with which his work coexisted throughout more than fifty years of poetic activity.

He revealed himself in 1948, with “As Mãos e os Frutos”, which would be followed, in 1950, by “Os Amantes sem Dinheiro”. His books were translated in many countries and throughout his life he was honored with numerous awards, including the Camões Prize in 2001. He died on June 13, 2005 in Porto, the city that welcomed him for more than half of his life.
