PAN calls for investigation into the death of fish and bivalves in the Manta Rota beach area

PAN says that dozens of dead fish and bivalves have appeared, which are causing “a nauseating odor prevalent in the area”

The People, Animals and Nature Party (PAN) of the Algarve has already alerted the responsible authorities to the «imperative need for an investigation in the Manta Rota beach area», where dozens of dead fish and bivalves appeared, which are causing «a nauseating odor predominant in the area».

PAN highlights that this situation is not an isolated incident, mentioning as a most recent example the presence of hundreds of dead fish and bivalves on the beach of Faro, at the entrance to Quinta do Lago, last year.

The party therefore requests that the facts be investigated, "regardless of whether they are the result of natural phenomena or human interventions."

«In August of this year, a green stain appeared in the Cabanas region, identified by the authorities as a cake dye, supposedly free of polluting properties. We intend to clarify whether there is any correlation between this incident or other possible discharges and the recent mortality of dozens of fish and bivalves in this area of the Ria. We wish to determine whether what occurred is attributable to natural phenomena, as explained by the APA in the case of access to Praia de Faro last year, and we urge the competent authorities to carry out the necessary steps to clarify the facts", declares Saúl Rosa, representative of PAN Algarve.

The party highlights the importance that these investigations, whether scientifically or conducted by the authorities, “receive additional attention due to the relevance of this heritage which is the Ria, an essential wetland for the region, covered by a set of sandy islands in a system lagoon, which should be safeguarded against any disturbing factor for the local fauna and flora».

«PAN has already sent photographic documentation and videos to the competent authorities, including the Maritime Police and its central command, as well as the Portuguese Environment Agency, among other entities. The seriousness of the situation raises serious concern, both for us and for the local population», concludes Saúl Rosa.
