Lagoa distinguished at the Portugal Smart Cities Awards

Algarve municipality was one of six awarded at national level

The Municipality of Lagoa was one of six winners in the 1st edition of the Portugal Smart Cities Awards – António Almeida Henriques, delivered on Tuesday, October 10th. Smart City Lagoa was thus distinguished as one of the best in the country.

Luís Encarnação, mayor of Lagoa, received the award that distinguished the Smart City Lagoa management platform in the “Sustainable and Intelligent Urban Rehabilitation” category.

The Portugal Smart Cities Awards – António Almeida Henriques, which are also a tribute to the former mayor of Viseu, recognized promoter of smart city policies in Portugal, were created to value the best innovation ecosystem projects and smart practices implemented by local authorities through sustainable, efficient practices that promote urban intelligence solutions.

In addition to Lagoa, the municipalities of Águeda, in the “Carbon Neutrality” category, Viseu, in the “Mobility” category, Sintra, in the “Public Space” category, and Alfândega da Fé in the “Health and Well-Being” category were distinguished. , and Guimarães in the “Digital Transformation” category.

 

 

The jury, chaired by Miguel de Castro Neto, director of NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS), at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, selected the six projects, one per category, from a total of 50 applications from different areas and covering the entire National territory.

Smart City Lagoa is an operations center that, using sensors installed in various equipment and the LoRa network (long-range wireless technology that allows connectivity and the creation of applications to share information across the entire municipality), receives , analyzes and integrates data that contributes to improving the management of various public services, such as lighting, garbage collection, traffic, irrigation systems, water meters and various incidents reported by citizens.

«This is a distinction that shows that we are on the right path and that we are very proud to receive. However, we know that there is a long way to go to reach the level we want, as far as Smart City is concerned», stated Luís Encarnação, president of Lagoa City Council.
