DRAP promotes training on “Sludge and Compost Sample Collection Techniques”

The training was aimed at military personnel from the Nature and Environment Protection Service, GNR and Technicians from DRAP Algarve

The Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries (DRAP) of the Algarve promoted, at its facilities, training three-day intensive session under the theme “Sludge and Compost Sample Collection Techniques for Analysis Laboratory”.

The training was aimed at military personnel from the Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA) of the GNR and Technicians from DRAP Algarve and aimed to «equip with skills and knowledge on the collection of sludge and compost samples for analysis, packaging and transport, as well as reinforcing monitoring and inspection mechanisms within the Agricultural Valorization of Lamas (VAL)».

The team of trainers was made up of members from INIAV, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), the General Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DGADR) and DRAP LVT.

In addition to the theoretical component, trainees had the opportunity to visit two external units.

At the WWTP of Faro Northwest, it was possible to understand the wastewater treatment process, whose solid phase consists of the use of a thickening drum and centrifuge for mechanical dehydration, culminating in the elevation of dehydrated sludge and its storage in a vertical silo, before transporting it to the treatment unit.

At the Ecoparque do Algarve, in Messines, owned by BioSmart of the NOV Ambiente & Energia Group, the process of treating sludge was made known, which is mixed with biodegradable waste, waste of wood and plant tissue and ash, so that, through the composting process, quality compost is produced for subsequent use on agricultural land in accordance with the legislation applicable to fertilizing materials.
