Portimão City Council determines Municipal Mourning for the death of Margarida Tengarrinha

The Municipality of Portimão determined Municipal Mourning on October 31st, the date on which the funeral ceremonies of the «illustrious Portimão native» Margarida Tengarrinha, who died yesterday.

Born in Portimão in 1928, «her 95 years of life form a remarkable journey, worthy of being remembered and honored by current and new generations», highlights the Portimão City Council.

«Passionate about all the arts, and especially gifted in painting and literature, where she distinguished herself, Maria Margarida Carmo Tengarrinha Campos Costa dedicated a large part of her life to fighting the Salazar regime, having even been forced to go underground». remember.

During the approximately twenty years she spent in hiding, one of her main tasks was writing in PCP press organs, such as the newspapers “Avante!”, “A Terra” (for the peasants of the North) and “A Voz das Comaradas” (newsletter for clandestine women), as well as Rádio Portugal Livre, in Romania.

After the 25th of April 1974, she was elected to the Central Committee of the PCP and deputy for the Algarve to the Assembly of the Republic, a position held from 1979 to 1987. She was also a member of the Municipal Assembly of Portimão.

After finishing his last term in the Assembly of the Republic, he definitively returned to Portimão. Since then, he dedicated himself to painting, having held several exhibitions, also beginning an intense pedagogical activity, teaching Art History at the Instituto de Cultura de Portimão – Universidade Sénior, in addition to having written the books “Samora Barros, Pintor do Algarve ”, published by the Algarve Tourism Region in 1990, “Da Memória do Povo” – collection of popular literature of oral tradition”, published with the support of the Municipal Council of Portimão by the publisher Colibri in 1999, and “Quadros da Memória”, by Edições Avante in 2004, among numerous communications at Algarve congresses organized by the Racal Clube de Silves, interviews and articles in various press organizations and even conferences.

The City Council also recalls that, with his brother, José Manuel Tengarrinha, «he made an offer of the land where the Raminha Elderly Support Center and A Catraia – Temporary Reception Center for Minors at Risk are located, both in Portimão».

Before the “Maria Veleda” Regional Prize, which was awarded to her in 2014 by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, Margarida Tengarrinha was distinguished in 2005 by the Municipality of Portimão with the Medal of Municipal Merit – Gold Degree.

As part of the ongoing celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April 1974, the Municipality of Portimão supported the production of several cultural initiatives around the figure of Margarida Tengarrinha, namely the film “Clandestina”, by Maria Mire, based in the book “Memórias de uma Falsificadora”, also written by Margarida Tengarrinha, which was premiered earlier this week at the Doclisboa Festival and will soon be presented in Portimão.

The Municipality of Portimão ends by offering “the most heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family”.
