More than a ton of hashish seized off the coast of the Algarve

In a joint operation by the Maritime Authority, Navy and Air Force to combat drug trafficking in the south of Portugal

Three high-speed vessels, 41 bales of hashish, weighing 1,1 tons, and around 20 jerricans of fuel were seized this evening, August 31st, off the Algarve.

In the operation, which took place 80 nautical miles, 148 km south of Portugal, an aircraft from the Portuguese Air Force, two Navy ships and three nautical resources participated – two from the Maritime Police, and one from the Navy, operated by Marines.

The drug vessel was driven ashore and handed over to the Southern Directorate of the Judiciary Police for investigation.

Since the beginning of the year, operations by the National Maritime Authority, the Navy and the Portuguese Air Force have resulted in the arrest of 72 people and the seizure of 31 high-speed vessels carrying around 31 tons of drugs.
