The Chamber of Lagos is dissatisfied with the "terrible service provided by ALGAR", the company responsible for collecting and treating recyclables (cardboard, plastic and glass) in the Algarve, and approved a motion where it "expresses its extreme displeasure" in relation to the inability to response from this entity.

The Lacobrigense council executive, in the motion he approved at the Chamber Meeting, points out that the company systematically fails to comply with “the periodicity of collections, a fact that leads to the accumulation of waste in the surroundings of ecopoints and ecological islands installed in the municipality and, consequently, problems of unhealthy conditions that put everyone’s health at risk”.

This situation also affects «the quality of life of the population and the reputation and image of Lagos, whose socio-economy depends, to a large extent, on tourists and visitors», according to the Lagos Chamber.

The municipality also guarantees that this is a situation for which “it has been regularly alerting the entity, and between February and July this year, it identified and reported the existence of 2890 containers at the limit of their capacity, with the surroundings full of recyclable waste”.

In addition to this problem, and given ALGAR's inability to respond, many residents and visitors end up depositing recyclable waste in containers destined for undifferentiated waste, which “puts into question the goals defined between the municipality of Lagos and APA – Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente within the scope of the Strategic Plan for Urban Waste”, in the case of selective collection.

The Lagos City Council promises to «make every effort to, within what is humanly and materially possible, mitigate the effects of ALGAR's poor service», reinforcing the selective collection of waste, «which is the total responsibility of the aforementioned entity ».

The Lacobrigense municipality joins other Algarve municipalities that have expressed equal dissatisfaction with the poor service provided by the company in collecting recyclable waste, «which represents a negative impact on the environment, society and economy of the territory».
