Work involves exterior painting and the surrounding wall

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, in Vila da Luz (Lagos), will undergo works, announced the Lagos Chamber. The municipality also wants to rehabilitate the Church of São Sebastião, in the city.

The work on the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz involves the exterior painting and the surrounding wall, which represents support of 27 euros to be allocated to the Fábrica Paroquial da Senhora da Luz, as approved at the last meeting of the Lacobrigense executive.

The origin of this religious temple is uncertain, although the year 1521 is mentioned in an inscription inside.

Considered an important monument in the municipality of Lagos, more specifically in Vila da Luz, where it is located, this church highlights the gilded altarpiece, dating from the XNUMXth century, where the images of São Romão, Santo Estêvão and Our Lady are present. Lady of Light, its patron saint.

The intervention integrates «the municipality's strategies to preserve its historical monuments, in this case religious, remembering that the Church of Santa Maria, in Praça do Infante, was recently the target of conservation and exterior maintenance work through support from the municipality» .

The municipality adds that «on the table is also the intention to rehabilitate the Church of São Sebastião, classified as a National Monument».

During the pastoral visit of the Bishop of the Algarve to Lagos, the president of the Chamber Hugo Pereira gave an update on the rehabilitation of the Church of São Sebastião, which, having already carried out a preliminary study, is now awaiting the definition of the official interlocutor on the part of the guardianship ( given the reorganization of responsibilities of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and the respective regional directorates) so that it is possible to conclude the tripartite protocol that will allow progress with the preparation of the execution project and, subsequently, with the work.

«As it is a state building and classified as a National Monument, the municipality has made efforts and has the expectation that this intervention will be considered in the State's investment plan, either through the State Budget or within the scope of funds from the Recovery and Resilience Program (PRR)”, the Lagos Chamber then added.
