Funeral of the former collaborator and director of Sporting Clube Farense will take place on Monday

The Chamber of Faro expressed his «deep regret» at the death of António Gomes Afonso, «historical figure and former collaborator and director of Sporting Clube Farense», who died at the age of 95.

«In addition to his lifelong connection to the sporting cause, Gomes Afonso was also an altruistic servant of the community and was also linked to various social causes, in particular through the Rotary Clube de Faro, having also been distinguished with a merit medal from the Municipality of Faro», recalls the Chamber of Faro.

«Born in Lisbon, Gomes Afonso soon settled in the Algarve and was a football referee before beginning a long association of around 35 years with Sporting Clube Farense, having served, for many years, as the club's general secretary».

«Gomes Afonso also worked, for several years, in the Algarve Football Association, at the time still called the Algarve Football Association. Faro, as rapporteur of disciplinary processes, having also been a leader and collaborated with other collectives and district associations of other modalities, namely Imortal de Albufeira», he added.

Sporting Clube Farense had also already regretted the disappearance of Gomes Afonso.

According to the Rotary Club of Faro, of which Gomes Afonso was a member, the wake will take place next Monday, the 11th, from 10 am, followed by the funeral celebration, at 00 pm, at the Church of the Convent of Santo António dos Capuchos, in Faro, close to GNR . The funeral will then proceed to the “old” cemetery in Faro (Cemetery of Hope).
