Gomes Afonso, historic Farense leader, has died

Born in Lisbon, Gomes Afonso ended up coming to Faro as an employee of the extinct Guadiana Hydraulic Directorate

Gomes Afonso, former permanent secretary of Farense, died at the age of 94. A former referee, he was also a director of the Algarve Boxing Association and the Philharmonic Association of Faro and co-creator of the Faro. 

In a note published on social media, Farense recalls Gomes Afonso's «unique dedication» to Farense.

He dedicated himself to sport – Farense, Imortal (accompanying Fernando Barata, when the former president of Farense left for the Albufeira team) and was also a director of the Algarve Football Association.

Furthermore, Gomes Afonso was a contributor to the Football Association of Faro, leader of the Algarve Boxing Association and the Philharmonic Association of Faro, co-creator of the Book Fair Faro and the summer futsal tournaments at Alameda João de Deus and permanent secretary of the local Rotary Club, and its honorary member.

The Parish Union of Faro has also lamented the death of Gomes Afonso who, moreover, was distinguished by the Municipal Council of Faro with the municipality's gold medal.
