PCP: More Housing Package does not solve problems, it only guarantees more money for the bank

Paulo Raimundo: Package “is a set of guarantees to continue to have more transfers to banking and real estate funds”

The secretary general of the PCP said on Saturday night that the More Housing package does not solve any of the population's problems and that it only guarantees more money for banking and real estate funds.

Mais Habitação, currently being analyzed by the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “in essence, is a set of guarantees to continue to have more transfers to banking and real estate funds”, criticized Paulo Raimundo.

“Regardless of the outcome (…) it does not respond to any problem that needs to be resolved. What was needed was to face the fundamental question (…), which is to make the banks pay the increase in interest rates with their profits. (...) And there is no measure in the Mais Habitação package (...) that solves any of the problems we have, neither access to housing, nor the question of rents”, said the communist leader, at the popular festivals of Amora, Seixal.

Paulo Raimundo once again defended one of the party’s proposals: “What was needed, as we proposed, is for the Government to set a [capital] moratorium, as it did during the period of covid[-19]” to repay the loan in more favorable conditions, he explained.

Mais Habitação includes tax incentives, determining that anyone who moves a house from AL to rent is exempt from IRS on rents for several years, and also has no limits on the definition of the value of the rent.

On the other hand, in areas of urban pressure, the AL will be subject to an extraordinary contribution of 20% – which is levied on a portion of the income generated and whose calculation takes into account the average rental values and the property's revenue.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has until August 29 to veto or enact the More Housing package.

“Theoretically eight days to take it to the Constitutional Court and then another 12 days to enact or veto it. It will be what I will occupy my mornings and evenings with for the next few days, even on vacation, ”he said on Thursday.

“It is perhaps the issues at the outset that are more 'divisive' and controversial, at least one of the laws. [One] is a public administration operating law, to make housing construction and access to housing more expeditious and put an end to bureaucracy, the other is the one that has forced leasing and local accommodation. [For] this one, I have to look more carefully”, indicated the head of state.
