Restoration work progresses on the Hermitage of São Sebastião, in Faro

Associated with this intervention, which is expected to last four months, the Municipal Museum is preparing a program of activities for the monument

The Hermitage of São Sebastião, a building classified as a Monument of Public Interest, built at the end of the XNUMXth century, in Faro, will receive, starting this month, restoration work on its main altarpiece, announced the City Council of Faro.

The intervention, which will be in charge of the conservation team of the Municipal Museum of Faro, should last approximately four months.

It aims to “stabilize the processes of degradation and perpetuate over time the heritage values ​​of the altarpiece, a work of baroque characteristics, dating from 1720, the year in which the chapter of the Sé made a contribution to this construction”, explains the municipality.

As it is a chapel invoked to São Sebastião, saint protector of the plagues, it was built at the end of the XNUMXth century in the old outskirts of the city of Faro to ward off pests and epidemics. Today, the hermitage is located in the center of the city.

But there are other marks of the historical and artistic past of this important temple – severely damaged by the invasion of the English troops of the Earl of Essex, in 1596 – that are important to retain and which are revealed both inside, with the carvings and tiles, and outside. , with some architectural transformations and renovations.

The main ones were built in the XNUMXth century, apparently by the well-known master mason Diogo Tavares.

Associated with this intervention, the Municipal Museum of Faro prepares an agenda of initiatives with the aim of expanding «the spirit of dissemination and study of heritage, but also of cultural mediation, sensitizing the community and other publics interested in this matter, on issues such as the protection of memories and historical remains».

This program will include guided tours, musical moments, lectures and educational activities, integrated in the Museum's school plan.

Over the next few weeks, the Municipal Museum will publicize the program of activities for this recovery project at the chapel of São Sebastião, open to all, with the aim of promoting a closer relationship between the community and the local heritage and expanding the network of tourist attractions. linked to religious architecture.
