The Civic Movement “For a Pedestrian Bridge to Cabanas beach” promotes, next Sunday, the 20th of August, at 19 pm, a human cordon on the walkway of the Marginal de Cabanas de Tavira, to intensify «the forms of struggle».

The Movement, which includes, among others, Carlos Batista and Maria José Mestre (former presidents of the Parish Council of Cabanas de Tavira), «people with decades of service to the public cause», points out that «for two decades» that the population of that locality on the edge of the Ria Formosa «claims pedestrian access to its beach, which they once accessed by foot, a possibility that was withdrawn when it was politically decided to dredge the estuary, despite the fact that the location does not constitute a navigation channel and the circulation to the east be prohibited».

Now, he recalls, «once the impossibility of going to the beach on foot was instituted, the crossing of the estuary began to be done exclusively by boat».

«Companies interested in the business quickly emerged, with emphasis on one of them, which, in addition to the crossing, operates the beach restaurant, bars and huge extension of huts, and to which the municipality, despite the population, intends to deliver the exclusivity of the crossing for another 25 years», emphasizes the Movement.

The citizenship group emphasizes that it is "a Natural Reserve area that enjoys the highest environmental protection (classified in the POOC as a Lagoon Zone of Restricted Use), a shallow water channel with a tendency to silting and just 200 meters separating the piers between banks, which before the aforementioned dredging was a very pleasant river beach».

Saying they were "unsatisfied with the decision", just over three years ago, people from Cabana formed the Civic Movement "For a Pedestrian Bridge to Cabanas Island", which "has been fighting for the construction of a pedestrian walkway to the beach , having collided with the municipal decision to intensify the sea crossing, on an exclusive basis», which the citizenship group says is a «notorious conclusion» with the company that operates this crossing.

O Sul Informação tried to speak with the City Council of Tavira, but a source from the Support Office for the Presidency said that the Municipality "has no comments to make on this issue".
