More than 5200 GNR soldiers deployed due to fire risk in the coming days

GNR elements highlighted for the prevention of forest fires were reinforced by 30%

The GNR elements deployed for the prevention of forest fires were reinforced by 30%, announced today the Minister of Internal Administration, revealing that over the next three days more than 5.200 GNR soldiers will be on the ground.

«Today we have a 30% increase in the patrolling capacity of the GNR forces on the ground: We will have more than 5.200 soldiers on the ground ensuring observation of all attitudes and behaviors in relation to forest fires», said José Luís Carneiro at the end of a meeting at the General Command of the National Republican Guard, in Lisbon.

The worsening of weather conditions and the increased risk of fire led to a reinforcement of means on the ground, which also has "another 920 elements who are in the 230 fixed lookout posts", added the minister in statements to journalists.

In total, there are «more than 6.100 elements that are actively ensuring the surveillance and observation of attitudes and behaviors on the ground», concluded José Luís Carneiro.
