The President of the Republic today justified the political veto of the decree on housing with the absence of party consensus and alleging the reduced effectiveness of the measures, stating that "life goes on" if the PS confirms the decree.

«I enumerate, point by point [...], shortcomings in the rapid implementation of this package and the total lack of agreement on the regime, total party consensus, it is only one political force that votes in favour, two deputies from two other political forces abstain. if and everything else votes against», said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the first of two days of official visit to Warsaw.

"What we needed was a reform that was not for two years, two and a half years, and for that it had to have significant support in parliament", he added.

The head of state explained that, "knowing that there is a majority that can reconfirm, in conscience I could not refrain from saying what I thought", because the set of diplomas "did not represent the national support base that was necessary".

«It is a question of the exercise of competence by the Assembly of the Republic and the President exercises his competence. The Assembly confirms, life goes on and here we will be alive for two, three years from now, to see the result », he declared.
