“Between fishing and weaving lines”: Conceição Abreu exhibits at the Portimão Museum

Between the 9th of September and the 29st of October

The exhibition “Between fishing and weaving lines”, which brings together a selection of works of different types created by Conceição Abreu, using various techniques, including drawings, sculptures, installations and photographs” will be inaugurated at the Portimão Museum on the 9th of September at 17 pm.

Curated by Sofia Marçal, the exhibition was conceived with the aim of creating, from a contemporary perspective, a dialogue with the ethnographic collection of the Museum of Portimão and the history of fishing linked to the city, and can almost be considered a retrospective exhibition.

The works, where fishing and weaving lines meet, reflect the artist's commitment to the search for the limits of materials and materials, materializing them in works of art and granting them immortality, by expanding the idea of perpetuity related to the design of fishing nets.

The Portimão Museum, linked to fishing practices and the sea, inspired Conceição Abreu to idealize this exhibition, having as a starting point a work of hers from 2015 — entitled “Destempo” and woven with nylon thread (usually used as fishing thread). and cotton thread (typical of handicrafts carried out in crochet, such as the white bedspreads that once covered the beds) —, which echoes the popular saying “where there are hammocks, there is lace”.

According to Conceição Abreu, «connected to the fishing villages on the coast, the notions of travel and place emerge, which are developed here in their connection and interweaving, having as an image the lines that unite and intertwine», from which the pieces on display result, «through the intersections with which textures and meshes were formed».

The exhibition, which «aims to be a journey and visual and aesthetic permanence», also seeks to reflect the path that Conceição Abreu has been following, «in the incessant search for the simplicity of the gesture, in the purity of the materials used in the construction of the works and in the subtlety and clarity of the stroke, of the drawing».

Conceição Abreu, born in Sintra in 1961, is an artist and researcher. PhD in Art and Design (DAD) from FBAUP (2018), Master in Multimedia Art - Photography, from FBAUL (2012), graduated in 2010 with Bachelor of Dance, from Escola Superior de Dança de Lisboa (1989). Individual Project in Painting (2000) and Complete Studies in Painting (1998) at Escola Ar.Co., she has exhibited regularly since 1999, and is represented in several collections in France, Australia and Portugal.

The exhibition “Between fishing and weaving lines” will be on display until 29 October at the Portimão Museum, where it can be seen on Tuesdays, from 14 pm to 30 pm, and from Wednesday to Sunday, between 18 am and to 00:10, with free admission on Sundays, from 00:18 to 00:10.
