South Korea: Tavira Scouts «are fine» and on their way to Seoul due to typhoon

25th World Jamboree has the participation of 762 national scouts and 43 thousand from all over the world

Top 15 Tavira scouts who are in South Korea to participate in the 25th World Jamboree "are fine" and on their way to Seoul, due to the approach of typhoon Khanun.

The information was given to the Sul Informação by José Graça, head of the Scouts of Tavira, who says that young people from the Algarve will travel from Saemangeum, where the Camp should take place, to Seoul, with all the national scouts, which number 762.

Em communicated, the Portuguese Scout Federation (FEP) explains that «the program offered to young people will be maintained, taking into account the new location».

With the theme “Draw Your Dream”, the Jamboree is taking place in South Korea, until the 12th of August, and brings together 43 thousand participants from all over the world. The Jamboree was supposed to take place in the coastal city of Saemangeum, but had to be moved to Seoul for security reasons due to the approaching typhoon.

«This activity is a unique experience in the life of a scout, where it is possible to experience the multiculturalism of scouting, which shares the same ideals, regardless of its location on the globe», clarifies the entity.

On the same note, FEP reinforces that, «since the first day of the activity, the well-being of the participants is our highest priority» and «for that reason, and in continuous cooperation with the organization of the event and with the Embassy of Portugal in Seoul, we have suggested improvements on the field, and these have always been heard».

In addition, all sectors were reinforced, increasing the number of volunteers (police, security, doctors, nurses, cleaning and maintenance teams).

“So far, young people have participated in activities inside and outside the camp. They had the opportunity to participate in an aquatic program, learn about Korean culture and visit a technology center with virtual reality games. On the 6th of August, Culture Day – a sample of cultures from different countries lived. Despite the challenging conditions, the camp became a great exchange space, where participants tasted new dishes, saw traditional costumes and learned international games and dances», says FEP, adding that «it takes care of the participants.

FEP is still proud» of the participants «who, despite the adversities, enthusiastically participate in the program and live this experience intensely».

In the same communiqué, FEP praises the work and efforts of the adult volunteers "who were and continue to be tireless in carrying out their duties at the 25th World Jamboree, demonstrating a true spirit of service to provide the best possible activity to all participants, a work that will continue in the coming days in Seoul».

In South Korea, there were 15 Scouts from Tavira, eight of whom are aged between 14 and 18, ages for which this activity is designed. The contingent of Grouping 100 from Tavira also has six IST (International Staff Team), young people over 18 years old.

Grouping 100 de Tavira is the only one from the Corpo Nacional de Escutas do Algarve to participate in this World Camp, which emerged as a project by Baden-Powell, founder of scouting, after the 1st World War.

In 2019, the Tavira Scouts had already participated in the 24th World Jamboree that took place in the USA, with a contingent of 20 elements.

This time, preparations for the World Camp began in 2021, when this group met for the first time to start outlining what participation in the activity would be like, starting the planning of fundraising.
