AHETA wants to partner with City Councils to solve the lack of housing for workers

Tries to sensitize local and regional officials to the lack of housing

The Association of Hotels and Tourist Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA) wants to establish a "partnership" with the Municipal Councils and regional entities with responsibilities in matters of land use, to "identify pockets of land" that allow the construction of houses for workers.

In a statement signed by its president Hélder Martins, AHETA suggests that these «pockets of land» be located «outside the areas of greater tourist pressure», allowing the construction of «accommodation units, with different types», committing themselves not to give the houses «another use other than that, even suggesting that, upon the approval of these projects» there is «an onus of non-sale or change of use, for 50 or 100 years».

The association is «aware of the great difficulty in obtaining good living conditions» for the workers of its associated tourist and hotel companies, due to the «impossibility of obtaining land for the implementation of accommodation, in dignified conditions».

These accommodations, adds AHETA, «would allow families to settle in the Algarve», thus contributing «to solving the housing problems» of the teams of its members.

«Only in this way will we be able to face the prospects for the future development of tourism in the region, contributing to better living conditions for employees and providing them with decent housing, one of the fundamental premises to motivate the arrival of new professionals to the Algarve», concludes that association employer.
