THEN! let's give new life to Portimão's Accessible Route on Rua Direita

New association aims to “impregnate the city with happiness”

The 150 meters of the gray path of the Accessible Route of Portimão that serves Rua Direita are gaining new life and becoming an authentic kaleidoscope of colors, through the creation of a fresco with shapes inspired by the landscape and luminosity of the region, announced today the Municipality of Portimão.

This innovative project, entitled “A Rua Direita em Festa”, marks the beginning of the cultural association POIS! – Palco das Ondas Invisíveis Studio and was designed by the young Frenchwoman Charlotte Mohns, known in the artistic world as Caïros, which has the collaboration of compatriots Kamille Bobeau and Gaspard Kyriacopoulos, and is expected to open at 19 pm on the 00th of July.

To this end, the young people work with standard colors inspired by the spiral logo of the Municipality of Portimão, from which the terracotta tones of the cliffs and tiles stand out, intertwined with the burning blues of the sea and the Algarve sky, using paints hardened with polyurethane, which will allow for greater resistance and durability.

According to Caïros, “the objective of the project, sponsored by the Parish Council and with logistical support from the Portimão Council, is to brighten up the historic center of the city, mixing the forms of nature and architecture that make up its essence, in the sense of making it more attractive to residents, merchants and tourists”.

“This will be the first phase of something more ambitious, as the idea is to align the entire Portimão Accessible Route, also counting on the collaboration of local artists, in order to boost the cultural offer and the economic fabric”, said the artist, recently author of a mural in Marseille.

The non-profit association POIS!, born from the collective vision of architects, artists, shopkeepers and young people from Portimão, aims to “impregnate the city with happiness”, through interventions and events in the public space.

“Under the motto 'Together, let's make Portimão the coolest city in the world!', our work within the association is voluntary, but we believe in the positive impact we can bring and we are determined to bring our ideas to life”, emphasizes Caïros.

Inaugurated in 2010, the Portimão Accessible Route was a national pioneer and one of the first in Europe, resulting from the municipal commitment to social inclusion, with the elimination of existing architectural barriers in the administrative center of the city.

With a continuous route of more than 5 kilometres, unobstructed and properly signposted, the route involved a municipal investment of around 300 thousand euros, allowing visitors to easily reach the main points of Portimão (public services, tourist attractions and shopping area), with the appropriate signage help.
