PAN Olhão's proposal for the creation of a network of multifunctional water fountains and a “H2Olhão” location application was approved with the votes of PAN, PS, PSD, BE and CDU.
Alexandre Pereira, PAN municipal deputy in Olhão, presented, in the last session of the Municipal Assembly, a proposal for the installation of a network of municipal drinking fountains “designed” to have three functions at the same time – traditional drinking fountain, water dispenser for refilling reusable personal bottles and bowls for animals, «thus minimizing water waste and reducing the consumption of single-use plastic packaging».
«Although there are some drinking fountains available in certain spaces in the Municipality of Olhão, we consider that there are not enough of them, many are out of order and those that do work do not allow the loading of reusable containers, namely bottles, intended only for water consumption at the moment", explains the municipal deputy.
As a politician and citizen with environmental concerns, Alexandre Pereira believes he has a duty to sensitize people from Olhão and other political forces to the use of water canteens or reusable containers instead of the typical plastic bottles, used for a few minutes but which take 500 years to degrade.
«On the other hand, it is more and more common for citizens to be accompanied by their pets
company, so the existence of these drinkers adapted for use by animals is an added value in the supply of water to four-legged friends».
Water for human consumption in Olhão has been consistently awarded the exemplary quality seal by the Regulatory Entity for Water and Waste Services (ERSAR) and, already in 2019, following a recommendation presented by the current PAN municipal deputy, the executive of the Chamber de Olhão started to use glass pitchers and bottles with tap water in Municipal Assemblies, Council meetings and other public events, instead of the usual plastic bottles.
«We also propose the creation of an application with the georeferencing of all reusable bottle filling points and drinking fountains, so that Olhanenses and other national and foreign visitors can find the location of these new drinking fountains, accessing a free app “H2Olhão”. With this initiative, the Municipality of Olhão will not only respond to the need for drinking fountains that allow all citizens to have quality water available while enjoying the city spaces, but, at the same time, will take another small but important step in terms of one of the measures with which it is intended to make citizens aware of the urgent reduction of the ecological footprint», concludes Alexandre Pereira.
