Overnight stays from tourists increased by almost 19% in the first six months of the year, driven by the 7,7% rise in residents and 24,2% in non-residents, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) announced today.
According to the quick estimate of tourist activity, in the first half, "overnight stays increased by 18,8%, +7,7% in residents and +24,2% in non-residents", while compared to the same period in 2019 "the overnight stays grew by 10,7%, +13,2% in residents and +9,6% in non-residents”, they state.
The tourist accommodation sector registered 2,9 million guests and 7,4 million overnight stays in June 2023, corresponding to growth of 7,1% and 3,7%, respectively (+12,2% and +9,9 % in May 2023, in the same order), according to the document.
Compared to June 2019, there were increases of 4,3% in guests and 3,8% in overnight stays.
Last month, overnight stays in the domestic market decreased by 6,7%, totaling 2,2 million and overnight stays in the foreign markets increased by 8,7%, corresponding to 5,3 million overnight stays. Compared to June 2019, there were increases of 0,5% in overnight stays from residents and 5,2% from non-residents.
The US and Canadian markets “continued to stand out with the highest growth compared to June 2019 (60,3% and 39,7%, respectively), and also compared to the same month of 2022 (22,2% and 36,2%, in the same order), advances the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Compared to June 2019, overnight stays in the Algarve continued to decline (-6,8%, -0,9% in May)”.
Among the biggest increases compared to June 2019, the North (+17,1%), the Autonomous Region of the Azores (+16,7%) and the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+14,3%) stood out.
“The net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation establishments (53,0%) decreased by 0,6 percentage points in June (+1,9 percentage points in May)”, reads the document.
The net room occupancy rate (63,5%) maintained the level of 2022 (+3,3 percentage points in May).
Compared to June 2019, “there were decreases of 2,2 percentage points and 0,2 percentage points, respectively, being the first decreases since September 2022, compared to the levels of 2019”.
In the second quarter, “overnight stays increased by 8,9% (+8,7% compared to the second quarter of 2019), while overnight stays from residents decreased by 0,2% (+9,4% compared to the second quarter of 2019) and non-residents grew by 12,9% (+8,4% compared to the second quarter of 2019)”.
In June, 14,7% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not register guests (19,0% in May).
