Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes will be a Museum Nucleus in Portimão

«One of the first elements to decorate the entrance to the future museum center is the set of six imperial palm trees already in place, which have a double symbolic function»

The architecture and specialty projects for the future Nucleus Museológico Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes are “being finalised”, announced today the City Council of Portimão.

The tender for the execution of the work «should be launched later this year, and the intervention is expected to start in 2024, the year in which Portimão will celebrate the first centenary of elevation to city», adds the municipality.

The projects, budgeted at 74.900 euros and awarded to a firm of architects, foresee that the entrance to the future cultural equipment will be made through the new street resulting from the connection between Largo do Dique and Rua Júdice Biker, opened to traffic on the 1st of July and which will be named Rua José Libânio Gomes, father of Manuel Teixeira Gomes.

It is the creation of this new Museum Nucleus that explains, according to the Portimão Council, the planting of six imperial palm trees in that street, an intervention that has been highly criticized since the street opened to traffic last Saturday.

According to the municipality, «one of the first elements to decorate the access to the future museum nucleus is the set of six imperial palm trees already in place, which have a double symbolic function in terms of the life of the honored person, since, on the one hand, these palm trees were, in times past, one of the symbols of a wealthy house, as is the example of the residence of Manuel Teixeira Gomes, while, on the other hand, they represent Algeria, in North Africa, where the patron went into exile and died».

Behind these tall palm trees, continues the Municipality, «a mural will be created with the image of Manuel Teixeira Gomes and other pictorial elements, which will evoke the life and work of the distinguished man of letters, businessman and diplomat, born in Portimão in the year of 1860».

For the realization of the future museum nucleus, the Municipality of Portimão acquired about two years ago, for around 300 thousand euros, a set of vacant buildings in Rua Júdice Biker and Largo do Dique, thus doubling the current area of Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes.

When the museum center opens its doors, it will be possible to exhibit part of the collection of the distinguished Portimonian writer and President of the Republic, as well as hold conferences, concerts and other sessions to publicize the life and work of the statesman, responsible for elevating Vila Nova de Portimão to the category of the city, through a decree-law published in the Government Gazette of December 11, 1924.

The Museum Nucleus will depend on the Museum of Portimão, where there is, in fact, a space dedicated to Teixeira Gomes, with the most important collection.
